History

1999

In 1999, the Undergraduate Program in Psychology at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) began its formation process. It started with submitting a proposal to the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) of the Ministry of National Education and Prof. Dr. Masrun, Chairman of the Psychology Consortium. Following this, the Chairman of the Consortium visited USU and gave a positive recommendation for the program's establishment. This led to the issuance of DIKTI Decree No. 116/DIKTI/Kep/1999, which officially approved the Undergraduate Program in Psychology opening under the Faculty of Medicine at USU. Subsequently, the Rector of USU issued Decree No. 588/JO5/SK/KP/1999 to form the preparation team. The initial curriculum was developed with support from prominent psychologists from Universitas Indonesia, such as Dr. Hera L. Mikarsa and Dr. Bernadette N. Setiadi. That same year, faculty members participated in the PEKERTI training to enhance their instructional skills, and promotional workshops were conducted across USU and within the professional psychology community. The Rector appointed the program management team, and the first batch of students was admitted through the national university entrance exam (UMPTN).

2004

In 2004, a memorandum of agreement was signed between the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Indonesia and the Faculty of Medicine at USU to establish the Master’s Program in Professional Psychology (P4JM). This agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. H. Sarlito Wirawan Sarwono (Dean of the Faculty of Psychology UI) and Prof. Dr. Sutomo Kasiman, Sp.PD (K) (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, USU).

2005

In 2005, the program celebrated the graduation of its first Undergraduate Program in Psychology cohort. That year, the program received its first official accreditation from the National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT), documented in Accreditation Certificate No. 07088/Ak-VIII-S1-001/USUCZI/I/2005, with a rating of B. The Indonesian Psychological Association (HIMPSI) also granted the permit to operate the P4JM master's program at USU.

2006-2007

Between 2006 and 2007, the master’s program received operational approval from DIKTI and was formally inaugurated as part of USU’s graduate academic offerings.

2009

In 2009, the cooperation between USU and the Faculty of Psychology at UI for implementing P4JM was extended through a renewed agreement. The extension was signed by Dra. Yati Utoyo Lubis, Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Psychology UI at the time.
