Professional Program

The Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Professional Psychology Education Program is an advanced education from the Bachelor (S1) Psychology Program.

Inaugurated in 2006 through collaboration with the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Indonesia, the Professional Psychology Education Program is committed to consistently providing quality education to produce professional psychologists with integrity by mastering the principles of psychodiagnostics, counseling, and psychotherapy. Psychologists graduating from the Professional Psychology Education Program can conduct psychological assessments and interventions and conduct applied research while adhering to and using the psychological code of ethics.

History

2005

The history of the establishment of the USU Professional Psychology Education Program began in 2005 and only started admitting new students in the odd semester of 2006/2007. Initially, it was established as a Master's Level Professional Psychology Education Program (P4JM). The establishment of the USU Master's Level Professional Psychology Program received a recommendation from the HIMPSI Central Board on July 22, 2005. After receiving this recommendation, efforts began to establish this professional program. At that time, the foundation for establishing the Master's Level Professional Psychology Program referred to the results of the HIMPSI VIII Congress in 2000 in Bandung, which decided that Professional Psychology education was equal to the Master's level. Then strengthened by the Circular Letter of the HIMPSI Central Board No. 001/PP-Himpsi/SE/VIII/04, dated August 21, 2004, on the equalization of professional education with Master's Program aims to answer the demands of community needs and competition in the era of globalization. In the implementation of this professional education, at that time, the Faculty of Psychology, which was still in the status of a Study Program under the Faculty of Medicine of USU, made a cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Indonesia in opening a Master's Level Professional Psychology Education Program which began admitting new students in the 2006/2007 academic year. The cooperation carried out is in the form of curriculum adjustments with the education system that applies in the UI Postgraduate Program for Master's Program in Professional Psychology and several lectures taught and guided by teaching staff from UI. In its journey, the name P4JM changed to Master's Program in Professional Psychology (MP2), but the level of education remained at the Master's level (KKNI Level 8). The fundamental change is the curriculum period, which used to be 4 semesters, increased to 5 semesters.

2023

As a follow-up to the implementation of Law No. 23 of 2022 on Psychology Education and Services, one of the mandates is that professional psychology education becomes a professional program equivalent to KKNI Level 7. For this reason, in the Odd Semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Year, the Master's Program in Professional Psychology will no longer accept new students as the beginning stages of phasing out the Master's Program in Professional Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology, USU

2024

The Master's Program in Professional Psychology (KKNI Level 8) officially changed to the Professional Psychology Education Program (KKNI Level 7) based on the Rector's Decree of the Universitas Sumatera Utara Number 596/UN5.1.R/SK/SPB/2024 on changing the name and title of the Master's Program in Professional Psychology to the Professional Psychology Education Program, Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Sumatera Utara.

Goals & Targets

To prepare general psychologists with STAR characters (devoted to God Almighty, innovative with integrity, resilient, and wise) and sensitive to the problems faced by the community based on USU's academic excellence in local wisdom and agro-industry.
To prepare general psychologists who are professional and have the authority to take promotive actions for the development of personal potential as well as to perform preventive and curative actions to overcome daily psychological problems and improve the psychological well-being of both individuals and society.
